About the IPS

The purposes and objectives of the IPS are as follows:

  1. to improve the treatment, rehabilitation, and care of persons suffering from mental illness:
  2. to advance the standards of all psychiatric services and facilities;
  3. to promote research, professional education in psychiatry and allied fields, and the prevention of psychiatric disabilities;
  4. to foster the cooperation of all who are concerned with the medical, psychological, social, and legal aspects of mental health and illness;
  5. to make psychiatric knowledge available to other practitioners of medicine, to scientists in other fields of knowledge, and to the public;
  6. to promote the best interests of patients and those actually or potentially making use of mental health services; and
  7. to establish and support standards for psychiatric practice and assurance of its quality;
  8. to provide a mechanism to transmit the views and wishes of the members of the Corporation to the policy-making bodies of the APA;
  9. to hold regular meetings for the interchange of ideas and discussion of advances in the field of psychiatry and at times to meet jointly with other associations in the field of mental health and neuropsychiatry;
  10. to advocate for its members.
